About

Objectives:

The workshop will address climate change from the perspective of adaptation of forests and people to the impacts of changing climatic conditions. Participants will have the opportunity of enhancing their understanding of the following aspects:

(1)   Observed impacts of climate change on forests and their services to society, particularly in tropical and sub-tropical regions;

(2)   Role of ecosystem services in adaptation strategies; and

(3)   Implications for forest research and on-the-ground forest management.

Themes and Content:

During the first day of the workshop the basic elements of describing the interactions between climate and ecosystem services will be discussed. Some regional cases will be analyzed from both scientific, as well as local peoples’ perspectives. Adaptation is particularly challenging for forest-dependent poor rural communities. Therefore, on the second day of the workshop we will discuss vulnerability analysis and methodologies that use climate change impact modelling as a tool for planning of vulnerability reduction strategies. Through group exercises, we will analyse regional peculiarities in such strategies and the implications for forest management interventions and further forest research efforts.

    Thank you for inviting us to commnt o our taining workshop.

    I can understand that the time is short to cover more topics on climate issues, however, I blieve the instructors can prepare a module that can help us to read and use while we are back to our respective regions. Therefore, please prepare a handout (with emphasis to forest and climate change) on the following topics too:

    Climate and atmospheric science, impacts assessment, climate and society, ecosystems resilience, risk and uncertainty, integrated solutions for mitigation and adaptation, mainstreaming adaptation into development planning and community-based adaptation. Practical training in the use of Geographic Information Systems (GIS) and in downscaling rainfall forecasts.

    With Kind Regards,
    Girma

    It will be really interesting to have a practical training on GIS regarding forests and climate change adaptation. Please incorporate a lesson on successful research proposal writing on forestry and climate change. Furthermore, it will be nice if the workshop would give some hints on sources of the climate change related research. I will be so interested if the workshop or any trainee give me a little lesson on mathematical modeling on both basic and practical aspects.

    Best regards

    Danesh

    Hello My name is Estanislao Salazar, I am from Nicaragua, I have conducted research in remnant forests of the Eastern part of Lake Nicaragua, with the purpose of integrating the production of environmental goods and environmental services to conservation. This is a process that can be seen from the perspective of the adaptation of people and forests to climate change. However, one of the major problems for research in our country is the financing of research projects. I consider it important to include in the course a presentation about sources of funding to research projects in forest and climate change adaptation. And development projectsat the local level, for adaptation to climate change.

    Thank you very much!
